Safety first

Only a few international car manufacturers have their own security vehicle engineering tradition. BMW is one of them, offering customers a profound experience that guarantees reliable and expert vehicle and passenger safety solutions. All active and passive safety aspects have been taken into account and effectively combined to create a holistic synthesis. The safety concept F.I.R.S.T. (Fully Integrated Road Safety Technology), which is applied to all BMW vehicles, is the cornerstone of this approach. Based on this, the safety level of the protective measures of BMW Security vehicles can be optimised to suit individual customer requirements.

One feature that now comes as standard on any BMW is Dynamic Stability Control (DSC). DSC is an advanced traction control system which works to achieve optimum levels of grip. By monitoring each wheel, the system's computer can reduce the amount of power developed by the engine or apply the brakes to ensure the car stays on course.

Various sensors are used to continuously monitor the vehicle's actual status. The lateral acceleration sensor measures the vehicle's grip during cornering. Brake pressure sensor and brake electric switches inform the system of any application of the brakes by the driver. The steering angle sensor measures the angle of the steering wheel, and the wheel speed sensors provide information relating to speed, wheel spin and wheel lock. If the sensors find that an unstable vehicle condition is likely to develop, DSC steps in and performs a brake or engine management intervention.

The DSC functions are:
~ Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) allows more wheel spin on limited grip surfaces to provide optimum traction.
~ Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) helps the driver steer while braking.
~ Dynamic Brake Control (DBC) reinforces the driver's pedal effort in emergency braking.
~ Cornering Brake Control (CBC) reduces the brake pressure to the inside rear wheel when cornering in order to maintain stability.
~ Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) distributes braking force based on vehicle load distribution.
~ Automatic Stability Control + Traction (ASC+T) prevent the wheels from spinning during Acceleration.

Available on BMW 6-cylinder models, the BMW 520 and the BMW Z4 2.0i, is Dynamic Stability Control(DSC+), which includes the following functions over and above the standard DSC system:
~ Brake drying helps prevent the deployed brake response caused by water forming on the brake discs in wet conditions.
~ Brake pre-tensioning anticipates the possibility of an emergency-braking situation.
~ Soft-stop automatically reduces the braking pressure on the rear axle just before reaching a standstill.
~ Brake fade compensation automatically maintains brake pressure, even after repetitive heavy braking manoeuvres.
~ Hill-start assistant holds the vehicle momentarily by applying and holding its brakes, allowing the driver to comfortably move his/her foot from the brake pedal to the accelerator.

The benefits of the DSC system is that if sensors indicate that the driver may be losing control of the vehicle, it immediately intervenes to regain driving stability, and improves control on a variety of surfaces. In addition DCS+ enables more comfortable and faster braking capabilities in both wet and dry conditions.
